Challenges and strategies for optimising for haptic perception

Abstract: During my work on design of optimal differentiators for force feedback rendering of a friction-driven acoustic model, it was necessary to compare various parameter configurations in order to balance precision and delay. This was done using numerical evaluation as well as by means of a perceptual task. In the end, I was left with a clear inconsistency between numerical and perceptual methods; this left me with an unsolved need to have better models of human haptic perception. In this talk, I will discuss this work, problems I encountered, clarify why such a model is necessary in optimal haptic design, and discuss some approaches that might work towards developing one.
